Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Tobacco Products Forced Closure of Airport in Lithuania
Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
