EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
