The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
